Tremont Coal Mine

A coal mine with a checkered past. It was established in 1850 by the Tremont Mining Company. It was a productive mine from 1850-1858 after which, for unexplained reasons, the yield of coal began to decrease year by year. Robert Freeman attempted, also for unknown reaons, to blow the mine up with dynamite but was unsuccessful. on July 19th, 1864 a posse of men led by Joshua Meade made their way into Tremont and attempted the same thing. This time, the dynamite exploded and ignited a pocket of methane gas. The entire mine was engulfed in flame and to this day the Tremont Coal Fire burns unabated under the ground in Tremont.
